What are Work Comp Insurance Class Codes?

Work comp insurance class codes are four digit numbers that insurance companies use to identify specific categories of work.

For instance, you know a roofer by his title, however an insurance company knows him as class code 5551.

How Work Comp Insurance Class Codes Work?

Insurance companies categorize various types of work into over 700 class codes to effectively estimate work comp rates for each type of work.

Insurance companies and rating organizations will then analyze all claims accumulated by each work comp class code, and use them to calculate a base rate for each class code.

For example, that roofer will have a more expensive work comp rate than class code 8810, an office employee, because more dangerous work is being performed.

The rate for an office employee in most states is under 40 cents for every $100 of payroll.  Conversely, some construction class code rates can be as high as $40 for every $100 of payroll!
